Items to help re focus your mind

Times when i see my mind wander and unable to focus, i use the below questions to help me re focus and come back to reality. I have used this so many times now ( gives you an indication that how easy it is to loose focus) and hoping that you folks also start benefitting from this

2. What’s been on your mind lately ?

3. Right now at this moment - what do you want most?

4. In order of importance, how would you rank - happiness, money, love, heath , fame?

5. What word best describes how you spent your last month?

6. What is the #1 motivator in your life now?

7. In one sentence - who are you?

8. What do you want to be known for?

9. if you were to travel 3000 KMS now, what is the 1 thing that you would miss most?

10.In one year from now , how do you think your life will be different?

11. Who makes you feel good about yourself?

12. What are the top 3 qualities you look for in your friend?

13. What has fear of failure stopped you from doing?

14. What is something you always wanted as a kid?

15. What stands between you and what you want?

16. What do you do when nothing else makes you happy?

Iphone + MagicJack

It rocks!!!! For a very long time , i have been researching this. I know for sure that it was possible, but the smart guys at the Magic jack always release an update which masks the SIP info. And when i do sucessfully get the the SIP info, Fring or Siphone gives way and limits the password to 18 chars or less. Finally, thanks tweeter ( it’s good when you follow the Siphone releases). After spending close to 6 hrs on this, i finally managed to configure my Siphone on Iphone after unmasking the SIP info from the Magic jack. It was worth. All i need is Wifi or 3G to make calls for free all over US & Canada.  What’s more interesting is – people in US can call me at my US number. Sounds cool right???. For those who were looking for this – try the below. If you need more assistance pm me. I’ll do what it takes to get that connection started.

Bangalore One

Bangalore One provides you with a one stop interface with government. Citizen interactions with government departments will be under a single umbrella.  I had heard about it from many , but i had not been to the place personally. So when it was time for my passport to be renewed, i thought this would be a good time to visit there. The only thought of having standing in a long queue at the passport office prompted me to go to Bangalore one. As i waded through the offices to find the Bangalore one, I was impressed. There are lot of services that they undertake and the staff was also very helpful. They gave me full info for all my queries and also offered to fill up the application form.  It looked so simple or atleast they made it look like that. Looks like i need to visit the Regional passport office after all, thanks to my valid visa.

E – 51 – Bricking

After the firmware update, the joy was short lived and i wanted my loved applications back. I was in a shocker, not because i lost them during the upgrade but was unable to install any because of the strong authentication. Any software that i tried to install either ended up with – certificate error, Error launching file due to security reasons, content already existed and Invalid certificate.

I was feeling a little handicapped as i was without my fav day to day apps. I was getting a little impatient and wanted it to install them. Hours of googling around, i came to know  that there are my brethrens who are also looking at such things and some of them even had achieved success. So decided to give it a shot in bricking/hacking my nokia E series. I tried the SecMan hack from BINPDA, result – my E51 crashed. Leave aside installing unsigned apps, it stopped installing the legal ones also. I was heart broken that i screwed my dear E51. That’s when i learnt that i could do a hard reset of my phone and i could give my E51 a new life. And when i did that, i lost all my contacts. More hours of googling and the confidence that even if i screw up, i can restore life to my cell by the hard reset method had me going for the kill. Finally , i found Drakkarious. This ones very easy – all you need to do is

1. Set the phone date to an older date – 15-05-2007

2. Install the downloaded sis file. This will install – CapsOn, Caps off, Helo Carbide and Xplore

3. After installation, run X-Plore and press “0” and tick the 4 boxes ( most of the time, its always ticked”)

5. Without closing X-plore, switch to menu and run hellocrbide.

6. In the hellocarbide press options menu and choose Menu1 and answer “yes” ( I have no clue what;s happening at all)

7.Go back to X-plore and extract installserver.exe and CprofDriver_SISX.Idd from your c:\hack.rar into c:\sys\bin

8. Restart your phone

After step 8, you should be able to install any apps on your phone, even unsigned :-)

I now have a host of apps which i am evaluating. Hope fully will put the list soon.

BTB, here is my disclaimer – Hacking is illegal. Do it only for educational purposes. I do not guarantee if something goes wrong. But unless something goes wrong, you will never learn the right way :-) ? Trying to become a ethical hacker :-)

E51 – The upgrade story

It’s been a year now, my faithful E- 51 has been relentlessly helping me. Until , i noticed that my firmware was 100.20.34 and Nokia were churning out firmware updates to almost all models. So i decided to check if they had a newer firmware and what change list it offered.

Surprisingly, a new firmware was out – 220.34.37 /RM – 244 . I was thrilled, but unfortunately the change list was not available any where. Some how i knew that this would be a good update and the delta between these firmware re-assured this to me. So i went ahead to nokia india site searching for this firmware update. I know for sure that it’s a kind of business tactic, that Nokia release firmware for only some areas – Europe being the prime and not for other regions. They do the same for the built in software’s as well. I don’t understand – if you have loyal customers, you might as well give them all the goodies and make them more happy. Nokia needs to learn.

Anyways, since i could not spot this update in the nokia india/asia pacific, i downloaded this from their Europe website and was good to go. The firmware upgrade was smooth and worked like a charm.

Remember to back up your phone before you indulge in such things. Well after flashing the ROM, here is my initial feel – Display is better, music player is better, vibration seem to be stronger,  and accessing apps is faster. The only flipside :-) none of my older apps installed- which means stronger authentication for apps without certificate signing. I will have to see what next to do.

Code coverage - Dead code

A nice read for those interested in dead  code analysis while doing code coverage

Dead Code is a term that means more than just a block of code with no possible entry points. It's been used to describe code that's been commented out or exists in files but not being built.  Also in some cases, it's been inappropriately used to describe code that is very difficult to reach.

The following 3 categories are meant to clarify the different types of "Dead Code" and recommendations on what to do for each.

Unused Code:

Orphaned code that lingers in the build but has no possible customer usage scenarios. This is more like the classical “Dead Code” definition; code blocks with no possible entry points.

Example:

· Class that never gets instantiated anywhere.

· Function that is never used in any other code.

Risk:

· Likely untested

· Likely un-analyzed by various runtime tools

· Potentially wasted space (media, ROM images, etc. if not optimized out).

· Security exposure.

Unused code is most likely optimized out, but in the cases where it makes it into the binary, it should be considered for removal.

Unreachable Code:

Code that is unexecuted due to logic that does not currently evaluate to allow execution (ex. relies on config/environmental scenarios that do not exist).

Example:

· Blocks of code that are logically unreachable: if (some_condition) { ...code....}, where some_condition doesn’t exist as TRUE in the world today.

· Blocks of code to handle non-existent hardware:

· Exception handler code that may impossible to trigger.

Risk:

· Likely untested, and can be awakened if config/environment comes into existence (most serious for already shipped code).

· Likely un-analyzed by various tools

· Wasted space (media, ROM images, etc.)

· Security exposure.

Unreachable code may also be optimized out (like in the cases of if (0) {...}), but for other code in this category that makes it into the binary, it may require core code changes to enable test cases, like interface hooks or some other type of testing approach (like fault injection).

The most serious code in this category is code that could become active post RTM when the world changes in a way that causes it to be executed.

Boneyard Code:

Code that is kept around for either posterity, tradition, fear of unknown (like if confronted with “let’s get rid of if”), or just plain laziness.

Example:

· Code that is commented out

· Code in files that are not part of compilation (i.e. in tree, but not in sources)

Risk:

· Untested

· Un-analyzed by various static analysis tools

· May not go through security review

· If enabled/re-activated at some future date, may introduce anachronistic code

· Security exposure.

Boneyard code is not as serious as it has no presence in shipping code and thus, by definition, poses no risk to our customers. Should be remove during something like a MQ timeframe or some other "Codebase Clean-up" effort.

Best DVD Ripping tool

Despite the fact that the freeware - DVD shrink has not been active in development for a few years now, this freeware decrypter, ripper and compressor is still my fav for ripping and backing up DVD's. Its compression feature is what sets it apart. It can compress 8GB dual layer DVD down to 4GB sizes to suit your standard DVD disk. DVD Rip makes this even easier with one click.

Try and let me know:-)

The Audit

I have a solid idea :-)

Send a guy to a company and make him sit next to the Network Admin to write a professional audit on his processes and practices. Naturally the Admin would be in his best and show the auditor all the clever and intelligent things he would do keep the company's network ticking and maintaining the downtime to minimum.

At the end of two weeks, you can now fire the Network Admin. There was never an Audit. this was just a method the company can use to replace their IT people without disruption and at the same time making sure that the old guy gave a complete Knowledge transfer to the new guy!!!!

Sounds foolproof :-) just hope that no one does this though!!!

Living by rules

I am a person of rules... I live and die by them..So here is my set of strict rules , incase you want to be me :-)

Rule #1: There are no rules
Rule #2: Forget Rule #1
Rule #3: Rules are meant to be broken
Rule #4: Never forget Rule #2
Rule #5: Don't play by anybody else's rules.
Rule #6: No fat chicks
Rule #7: Forget Rule #6

Isn't it amazing ???? ;-) This is the rule to attain moksha :-)

Tracing an email???

Tracing an email has become so easy now, that even you can trace any email sent to you , but since they have tied the IP to the lat/longitude on the Google map, its not way correct. But at least you can figure out your ISP and then start the trace from there.

You can trace your email HERE

Gmail and Yahoo for E51

I was trying to configure gmail for my E51, and was running into some issues. So i got on to my GOD ( aka google) , but somehow this piece of information i did not find them all at the same place. So after a lot of cross blog, cross forum readings i have collated the info not only for others but also for me to look back in future

Connection Settings > Incoming E-Mail
User name: Enter your complete Gmail e-mail address including ‘@gmail.com’
Password: Enter your Password
Incoming Mail Server: imap.gmail.com
Access Point in Use: Select the active data connection
Mailbox Name: Gmail
Mailbox Type: IMAP4
Security (ports): SSL/TLS
Port: Default

Connection Settings > Outgoing E-Mail
My e-mail address: Enter your complete Gmail e-mail address including ‘@gmail.com’
User name: Again enter your complete Gmail e-mail address including ‘@gmail.com’
Password: Enter your password
Outgoing Mail Server: smtp.gmail.com
Access Point in Use: Select the active data connection
Security (ports): StartTLS
Port: 587

I think the other details such as User Settings,Retrieval Settings & Automatic Retrieval are fairly simple and you can choose your config.
Incase you want to configure Yahoo ( not Plus or Premium) just make the following changes -
incoming mail server : imap.mail.yahoo.com
outgoing mail server : smtp.mobile.yahoo.com

And make sure that for email just enter your yahoo user name only (without '@yahoo.com)

****UPDATE****

While the gmail setting works perfect, yahoo settings run into trouble. You amy safely download the Yahoo GO( which is slow) or consider installing opera mini , but nothing beats the inbuilt browser of E 51

Taming the shrew!!!

Taming the client is an art. But this is something which no college or books will teach. I think this is because there is a very very vital ingredient for this and as such this ingredient is not always available:-) Take a guess???

Yes, its called Time :-) the one with capital "T". Even though we were pulling Jagtap's 7, it requires time as this idiot comes accompanied with various dependent parameters. i have upped the steam for my team and they are raring to go and even though i was extra cautious on my final plan, I think credit to be given to my boss who actually convinced the client that - this was the do-able plan and even though all resources are over loaded, we are still committed to this and blah blah :-) i think we just hit two birds in one stone with this move. Bird 1: Customer was kind off sympathetic towards my resources and asked me not to push my team too hard( the mpp plan showed heavy usage and leveling threw the project out of time bounds). Bird 2: We are currently 1 day ahead of schedule:-) I know the customer is happy, but i dare not to speak anything, coz all through this project i have realized one thing - one day you are the dog , the other day you are the pole. So i am keeping the cards close to my heart:-)

Life in Doha Series

Well, amidst all the project pressures of delivering the software as of yesterday today:-) we embarked on what we thought was our vacation of funtime to Doha for er the deployment of software. My team consits of - Guru,Balaji, Praga and myself........

Just a quick background of these ppl will make you see these people as i see them :-).
Guru - A drummer by passion. A musician for love. You can find him humming and more merrily hammering the laptop keyboard as a drum. A gregarious person , who can make you ROFL :-) but @ the same time equally sentimental. Currently he is low on confidence :-(
Balaji - Would have been a politician if not for a MOSS specialist. A great designer. Small attitude problem ;-). A voracious eater , given his built. With him it is WYSINWYG :-) read the NOT in between.
Praga - A smoker who does not take any tension. Comming from a public section background and is pretty much laid back in his work.Has the brain, but chosses to use it while he is asleep. Caution: this guy talks, laughs, cries and walks all in sleep.

Thats the pick!!!. While i share the room with Praga, Balaji & Guru chill in the other room.
Watch out ...i 'll blog more

MOSS 2007 - Installation guide using VPC

Unix Directory Structure

The other day , one of my colleagues was running into issues understanding the linux dir structure. Looks like he had messed up his basics or was away technically for too long. So i took some time in explaining to him the structure. He was impressed and instantly i put this in a pic so that ppl can actually benefit from this...
